Obituary of Alger L. Dow
Alger “Al” Dow, 84, of Sawyer, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2019 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was blessed to be at home under the loving care of his wife of sixty-two years, Anne and his son, Craig. Al was born on December 7, 1934, the third son of Owen A. and Verabell C. (Schultz) Dow in Hillsdale, Michigan.
Al was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Family gatherings were joyous occasions and a time when all could enjoy some of Al’s marshmallow peanut candies or his famous Chex mix. He could be found laughing and sharing stories while enjoying his cold MGD.
Al was a proud, lifelong foundryman, working at numerous foundries in the Midwest and reluctantly retiring from Bosch at the age of 70. He had great respect for those he worked with and was a father figure to many.
Al was a generous man, always willing to help a friend or neighbor. He never had a bad word to say about anyone, always asked about what was going on in your life – truly a kind man. Raised on South Sand Lake in Hillsdale, Michigan, along with his three brothers, he learned to fish and carried that love throughout his life. He was a master handyman, from fixing washers to redoing floors, he could do it all.
He is survived by his soul mate, Anne (Rockwood) Dow, whom he married on March 2, 1957, at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hillsdale, Michigan. He is also survived by his children, Kirk (Ronda) Dow, Craig Dow, Lisa (Jim) Koth, Linda (Phil) Marshall, Andrew (Kristen) Dow, Brian (Janelle) Dow, and Jason Dow; his beloved grandchildren Stephanie (Jim) Sobota, Theresa (Andrew) Flanagan, Lindsey Koth, Stuart (Amber) Marshall, Natalie Marshall, Kelsey Stevenson, Drew Dow, Owen Dow, Emmet Dow, Alexander Dow, Evelyn Dow; and his great granddaughter, Leighelle Sobota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, DeWayne Dow, Wendell Dow, Marlin Dow; and daughter in law, Patricia Dow.
Al will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
